Can running improve mental health?

Exercise, such as running, has long been an established way of boosting the production of endorphins or “feel good” chemicals in the brain. In turn, these endorphins trigger receptors, establishing feelings of decreased pain, heightened pleasure and a reduction in stress.
Our bodies produce a stress response in answer to anything that makes us feel threatened or upset. This stress response can affect our sleep, emotional well-being, and physical health. Finding ways to counteract the stress response is crucial for good health.

Research

A recent study in Amsterdam has concluded that running regularly for 16 weeks has the same impact on anxiety and depression as taking medication or antidepressants for the same period of time. 141 participants joined the study, with 45 opting to take medication, and 96 opting to take part in the running programme which consisted of three weekly 45-minute sessions.

45% of the participants in each study group reported an improvement in their mental health. As well as having a positive impact on mental health, those exercising as an alternative to medication also saw improvements in their physical health, such as improved heart function, weight, and blood pressure. Those on antidepressants, however, saw a decline in this area.
