What is OCD?

Something that you might hear when discussing mental health is the term OCD. This is something that many people suffer from, and it is a mental health condition which is characterised by the person who has it having obsessive thoughts and then compulsive behaviours that are a result of them – hence the name, obsessive compulsive disorder.

This is something that can be treated with help from medication as well as talking therapies and in particular cognitive behaviour therapy, however, the person needs to be assessed by a mental health professional in order to access the correct help for them.

OCD is something that can affect any person of any age or gender, and it is something that can have a detrimental effect on a person’s life, hence the need to treat it correctly. It can also lead to other mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.

If you have a friend or a family member with OCD, it is a good idea to find out more about it – you can look at helpful online websites such as the NHS or Mind, the mental health charity, or you can even attend a course like these mental health training courses https://www.tidaltraining.co.uk/mental-health-courses/

Help and support is a really important part of recovery from OCD, so if you do know someone who suffers from this condition, letting them know that you are there to listen and support them can be a really positive and helpful thing to do.
